Reimagining the Credit Union

Credit Unions are facing increasing pressure from larger banks and fintechs that offer advanced banking capabilities, faster services and more attractive product offerings.

We partnered with Interior Savings to help them with their ambition of becoming come the most digitally native credit union in Canada while ensuring we retain the secret sauce of the Credit Union model.
Laying the foundations of a great experience
Customers have shifted their focus from simply seeking low-interest rates to prioritising a high-quality user experience. People have now come to expect intuitive, transparent, and efficient interactions with financial institutions.

It was therefore crucial for Interior Savings that while we looked to define what the differentiating aspect of the proposition would be, we also nailed the basics that customers expect. From intuitive user-friendly navigation, the ability to separate money to reflect my mental model of money to seamless money movements.
Shaping the prop
Using the Jobs to be Done framework, we uncovered key opportunities to anchor our proposition and identify areas for ideating differentiating features.

Through this process, we discovered that customers primarily need support in three key areas: first, they seek greater clarity and visibility into their financial health, allowing them to understand where they stand; second, they want more control over their finances and tools to help them build healthier financial habits; and third, they need a sense of security about their financial future, with guidance and solutions that help them plan and protect what matters most.
Money, grouped your way, around your goals
We introduced savings pots tied to specific goals, allowing users to organize their money into distinct "buckets" that reflect their personal ambitions. This approach not only gives people greater visibility into their finances but also empowers them to manage their money more effectively by aligning it with their priorities.

Whether saving for a vacation, home improvements, or an emergency fund, these goal-oriented pots provide a clear, structured way to track progress and stay focused, offering both control and motivation to reach their financial objectives.
Home ownership
We heard from many customers, particularly younger buyers, about the challenges they face when trying to purchase their first home. To address this, we created a dedicated first-time buyer journey designed to help them set achievable goals and navigate the complexities of homeownership.

By breaking down the barriers of confusion around the home buying process, we provide a clear, step-by-step path that empowers customers to understand what they need to do, when to do it, and how to stay on track, making the dream of homeownership more accessible and less overwhelming.
Smart, straightforward and actionable financial guidance
We provide digestible, contextual, and relevant content that gets straight to the point, offering practical insights without any unnecessary fluff. By leveraging data and actionable insights, we suggest smart money movements—like how to pay down debt more quickly or optimize savings—empowering users to make informed decisions that improve their financial well-being.

This approach ensures that the advice is not only easy to understand but also directly applicable to their unique financial situations, helping them take meaningful steps toward their goals.
Unlocking the secret sauce of a credit union
Credit unions are uniquely owned by their members, which allows them to reinvest in the community and prioritise collective well-being.

By harnessing the power of digital tools, we can enhance this community-driven ethos and make it more impactful. For example, using spend data from members' purchases, we can suggest rewards for shopping locally, encouraging support for small businesses and strengthening the local economy.

This not only aligns with the values of credit unions but also deepens members' connection to their community, all while providing them with tangible benefits for their everyday spending.
